MPB 1712 - Seminar
The course provides an exposure on issues related to ELT/LLT. Areas such as Sociolinguistics and language learning, teaching reading and writing in ESL, and using computers in language teaching will be explored. Critical reading on selected articles and critical writing are encouraged in this class. Participants will be given the opportunity to presentorally (and in written form) on some of the empirical research done by other researchers.
MPB 1313 - Second Language Acquisition

It will also critically examine some chaning views of language and communicative competence and their implications for the study of SLA. Participants will then be given the opportunity to review some research work in the area as well as set up their own small-scale study to investigate issues in SLA.

MPB 1353 - Language Teaching Methodology
The course introduces participants to some of the major trends inmethods, approaches, assumptions and issues of the nature of language and how it can be learnt, acquired and taught. Major methods and approaches include structural, communicative and cognitive ones; major issues include views of language learning and teaching, the need and roles of learners and teachers, learner autonomy andstrategy, group work, individualized learning, skills teaching and integration, authenticity and process of learning. The changes in these trends will be discussed and participants are encouraged to internalize and discuss the application of these issues to their own teaching situations.
MPB 1724 - Research in Language Learning and Teaching
This course is a requirement for those undergoing the taught course mode. Students must attent foru hours of formal class insturctions but when they write a research proposal, they are left to work on their own. The research proposal in then submitted to the course instructor to be evaluated. Later on, a supervisor or supervisors is/are assigned to assist the students to complete the project. The students’ activities include making an oral presentation of the research proposal for a panel of evaluators, which include the supervisor(s) and attend consultation sessions with the supervisor(s).
MPB 1343 - Computer Assisted Language Learning
The course will introduce the participants to computer-assisted language learning (CALL)-related topics such as the History and development of CALL, CALL in SLA, research in CALL And CALL software of review. As part of thetraining, students will have the opportunity to review available software and to look at the possibility of integrating CALL in the teaching and learning of language. Through reading of research articles in CALL, classroom discussion and lectures, students will be given the hands-on experience of using and building simple language learning programs to be used in their ESL classrooms.
MPB 1323 - Syllabus and Materials Design
This course introduces participants to issues in syllabus and materials design. Several broader theoretical considerations in language-in-education planning and curriculum decision making will be discussed. Syllabus design and curriculum planning will be looked at within second language learning and various sociopolitical contexts. Participants will be writing reaction paper of selected readings to show their understanding on key issues.
