10.0 Assessment Glossary

Table 4 provides a glossary of terms that have been applied in the Post Graduate Assessment for Learning Handbook to facilitate faculty / students to understand and interpret these terms in the context of assessment.

Statement describing evidence essential to a certain criteria based on a set standard.

Learning Outcome

Learning goals described in the operation; whether its activities, products or performance that can be measured.

Reliability

The main principle for the measurement of consistency / stability of the instrument.

Validity

The main principle for content measurement; assessment conducted capable of measuring learning content that enables the right interpretation of student achievement.

Competency

The ability / skills students ability to acquire  knowledge,skills and values ​​to meet the needs of study.

Scoring Criteria

The rules in determining scores for students’ assignments.

Analytical Scoring

Scoring procedure that produces a composite score for each criterion which then produce an overall score of achievement / performance.

Holistic Scoring

Scoring procedure that produces a score for overall achievement / performance.

Assessment

The process of collecting, analyzing, recording, grading and interpreting achievements / performance of students learning.

Self-Assessment

A systematic review process of the performance of a student for the purpose of improvement in the future. It can be done by comparing to a standard / criteria set by criticizing own work.

Assessment for Learning

The process of evaluating / measuring achievement and performance integrated in teaching where academic staff feedback can help the process of learning and modify teaching strategies.

Rubric

 

A set of criteria developed to help the academic staff in creating transparent and fair scoring of students’ assignments. Consists of three basic components namely; criteria, standards and descriptors.

Standard

A level of expected achievement/ performance of students in their assignments.
